Moving Clutter

When we start to declutter a room, we often think we are making such great progress and can finally breath in that space. More often than not, that clutter was just transferred to another room. All of your mess just relocated in the house, whether it all ended up in one place or ended up throughout the house. This is why it is crucial to be mindful about your organizing as you clean out a space. Here are some tips to help you get rid of clutter and not just move it somewhere else.

1. Declutter with Purpose.

Set your mind to declutter. When you make the decision to clean out, you have to go into it with an open mind. Your goal is to get rid of things that are taking up unnecessary space in your life. Declutter without forgetting that.

2. Set a motto.

When we start to declutter, it is easy to get caught up in all of the items you own. Set a motto - what is your end goal, why did you decide to start decluttering now. Bring yourself back to that every time you are finding it difficult to move through your items. Let that be your guide.

3.  Be strict with yourself.

Bring yourself back to your motto. Keep your focus on the end goal. Be firm with yourself, don't let yourself get distracted. Take the time to make those tough decisions, and figure out why you might not be letting something go.

4. Leave yourself time to deal with the "other stuff."

Set a timer for your organizing session. If you do too much it can become overwhelming, if you do too little, you won't feel like you've accomplished anything. Make sure you keep time at the end for anything you put in the "I don't know" pile. Deal with that now. If you put it off until another day, we just move our clutter. This can become a vicious cycle.

When you decide to declutter, do just that. Don't let yourself just move the clutter from one place to the next. Set your goal. Set your mind. And don't just move it, lose it!
