  • Personal experience: Only experience with drop off, but incredibly easy and safe

Vietnam Veterans of America

  • Locations nationally

  • They accept most household items including clothing, electronics, houseware, etc.

  • Schedule home pick up or drop off locations

  • Personal Experience: Incredibly easy to work with, very easy to schedule pick up’s online

Goodwill

  • Locations nationally - stores, donation centers, and bins

  • Accepts pretty much everything, clothing, books, houseware, etc.

  • No home pickup, drop off only

  • Personal experience: Can be busy dropping off at donation centers, recommend finding a quieter time to go, especially if you have a large amount to donate

Big Brothers Big Sisters (Westchester, NY Chapter)

  • Locations nationally, you will need to locate your local chapter for more information about donations

  • Donate clothing specifically

  • Home pickup is currently on hold due to COVID, but you can still drop off clothing at their bins

  • Do not have personal experience donating items with this organization

Local Organizations Near You

  • There are local charities near you that may accept donations

  • Check with your local centers of worship, public libraries, career centers, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, etc.

  • Join local Facebook Groups that focus on discarding items: a local Give & Take group, Buy Nothing groups, neighborhood groups, etc.

Habitat for Humanity

  • ReStore locations nationally (search for your local one)

  • Accept small and large donations of new or gently used furniture, appliances, housewares, building materials and more

  • Drop off to local store; they do offer free pickup of larger donations, arrange with your local store

  • No personal experience with donating items

 

Junk Pickup Organizations

  • Select locations nationally

  • It is a paid service, charge by how much you fill their truck

  • They take everything

  • Priority is eco-friendly, they partner with local charities and try to donate/ reuse items first

  • Don’t have personal experience with them, but are very similar to The Junkluggers in what they offer

The Junkluggers

  • Select locations nationally (they are growing and expanding into new areas on a regular basis)

  • It is a paid service, they charge by how much you fill their truck

  • They take everything, from junk to donation items

  • Priority is eco-friendly, they partner with local charities and try to donate/ reuse items first

  • Personal experience: They are incredible and easy to work with. Easy to schedule and they will move everything for you. Really great if you have a large amount or large items that can be challenging to move.

 

Shredding Services

Small Amount of Shredding

  • If you have a box or a small amount of shredding you can drop off at various locations

  • These are paid services:

    • Local UPS Stores (make sure they have shredding services)

    • Staples/ OfficeMax (most office stores)

  • Free services

    • Check with your county or town, often the shred truck will visit various municipalities and allow residents to bring one box of things to shred (personal documents only)
