Top 10 Best Organizing Tips: The Last Five

Tip #6: Clear the space completely.

As you start to organize, you realize that it becomes more of a mess before it gets better. As you start to organize, first clear the space and don’t put anything back until the space is clear and you have already purged the items. There are two ways to go about this. First, you can completely clear the space (i.e. closet, wardrobe, bookshelf) and then start organizing, sorting and purging. Or, you can start pulling items, organizing, sorting and purging and then ensure the space is completely clear before putting things back.

When you clear the space completely as you organize, it allows you to re-envision the space. Clearing the space helps you have a clear mind to put things back in a logical and proper order in way that will work for you. Its possible the mess was a result of the space not being set up in an ideal way for you and your life. Clearing the space helps you reorganize in a better way.

Clear the space. Clear your mind. Reinvent the space for your life.

Tip #7: Be realistic.

It is easy to get carried away when you start organizing and have ideas and plans about what your space is going to look like when you’re done. Remember that organizing can also be exhausting. It takes a lot of energy, both physically and mentally, to clear your space. Be realistic about what you want to get from your purging and decluttering. Use your goal, bring yourself back. Be realistic about what you are willing to keep, and willing to get rid of. Be realistic about what is important to you and what will make your space your own. Know your space and the capacity. Know your budget. Know what makes you happy. Don’t get distracted by Fixer Upper or anything on HGTV.

Be realistic in your space and your values.

Tip #8: Stay focused on the goal.

Staying focused on your goal can help you get through the steps on cleaning out and organizing. Any time you get stuck, come back to your goal, your purpose. When you start your process for the day, remind yourself of it. When you can’t decide what to keep or what to get rid of, come back to it. Let your goal guide your decisions. Let it inspire you as you organize. Let it drive you.

Stay focused. Remember your goal.

Tip #9: Let things go.

It’s okay to let things go. It can be hard, but decluttering and cleaning out are not meant to be easy. Organizing is a process. Some things we keep, some we don’t. Use your goal, clear you mind, and let it go. It can be difficult to let certain things go and that’s okay. Declutter and go through your items. When you finish - do it again. You’ll notice, the more frequently you go through your belongings, the “easier” it gets to let things go and keep only what you want. It also lets you see how much you really have and knowing how much you can realistically keep in the space that you have.

It’s okay to let things go. Throw it away. Donate it. Or reuse it for something else.

Clear your mind. Process. Let it go.

Tip #10: You can’t clear all the clutter in a day.

Have you ever tried to organize your entire house in one day? Have you been successful at it?

If you answered yes, sorry to say, but you are lying or you haven’t lived in that home for more than 5 minutes. If you answered no - thanks for being honest! It is not possible to organize an entire home EFFECTIVELY in one day. Sure, you can throw everything away and then you’re done, but you also have nothing left. If that’s your goal - wonderful! If not, as it isn’t for the majority of us, we want to make our space more representative of us. We want to clear away the stuff we don’t need and keep and treasure the things we do. That process takes time. Don’t overwhelm yourself, and don’t be hard on yourself if you can’t clear it all in one day. Take your time. Find a good breaking point for the day, take a break and come back later.

It’s a process. Take your time. Let the space be yours.
