How to Get Started
People often tell me they want to get more organized or go through their clutter and often can’t figure out where to start or why they “can’t” start. The struggle we have to get started is overwhelming. Often the place that is most cluttered or disorganized for us is the place where we think we need to start, but because it is overwhelming, we never start. How do we get out of this cycle and actually get started?
Don’t organize that spot first. I know it sounds counterintuitive - “but that is what is stressing me out!” - but it is already overwhelming, and that is why you aren’t able to get started. Pick a drawer or do a clean out of your closet, start smaller and manageable. Maybe it’s not even a place that needs a lot of organizing or clear out, but it just needs a small tidy or revamp.
How will organizing something get me to finally start clearing out my overwhelming spot? When you clear out, even a small amount, or organize a small spot, it truly motivates us to keep going. Tackling one project, no matter how big or small, gives us that push that we can handle it, and we can make decisions about organizing and clearing out. This motivation we now have, can help us move into that overwhelming space and take it step by step to get the clutter under control.
It can be easier said than done, and that is okay. Organizing and clearing out is a process, it’s not going to happen right away and it may take a few tries to “get it right.” Just start making progress now.
