Should I do a Yoga Teacher Training?

If you’re asking yourself if you are ready to jump into a yoga teacher training program, keep reading.

Simply, if you’re asking yourself the question, the answer is yes.

Once you get the idea or the feeling that a yoga training is something you might want to do is your gut telling you that you are ready.

But, what if I don’t want to teach?

The reality is that many more people have a teaching certificate than actually teach. There’s no number, but looking back at my first teacher training, less than half are teaching now.

Taking a teacher training doesn’t have to lead into teaching.

Then, why would I take it?

Teacher training is an opportunity to dive deeper. Deeper into the practice of yoga, and deeper into awareness and understanding of yourself and how you interact with the world around you.

What will I learn about?

All teacher trainings will include anatomy, sequencing, yoga philosophy, teaching principles, ethics, and more. All training programs registered with Yoga Alliance have a basic set of standards they have to follow and then there is freedom around electives and lineage focus.

How do I pick what one is right for me?

Here are the main things to think about when looking for the right training program for you:

  • What is the schedule? Is it fully in-person? Fully online? Hybrid?

  • Have you taken classes with the trainers previously? If you haven’t, I highly recommend you do to know that they teach in a way that you enjoy and that resonates with you.

  • What is the lineage/ style being taught in the training?

  • What are the expectations outside of training hours? Homework? Attending classes?

  • Are there scholarships or payment plans?

  • Is the training registered with Yoga Alliance?

  • Are there additional expenses outside of the program fee?

  • What kind of support is offered for the students?

  • How many students are in the training?

The answers to these questions will vary based on what you are looking for, but it is a good place to start. Ask questions, trust your gut, and find the best training to support what you are looking for.

Are you ready to teach? To learn, commit, and transform your life?
