Yoga Pose: Savasana

Savasana is the most important pose we practice in yoga.

What does it involve?

To come into savasana, you’ll want to find a comfortable position laying on your back. To add more support, if needed, you can add a pillow, blanket, or bolster under the legs.

If laying flat on your back is not a comfortable place to hold and stay, you can put your legs up the wall, sit with your back against the wall, or lay on your side.

The intention of savasana is to find a place in which you can hold comfortably for an extended period of time.

Benefits of Savasana

  • Calms central nervous system, aiding the digestive and immune systems.

  • Calms the mind and reduces stress.

  • Reduces headache, fatigue and anxiety.

  • Helps lower blood pressure.

  • Promotes spiritual awakening and awareness of higher consciousness.

Allowing your body to fully settle into savasana can be challenging for many of us. Here is my advice, allow your body to settle in, give it time, allow your mind to wander if that’s what it needs to do. Don’t fight it. As with everything, it takes practice and time to truly feel the benefits of savasana and relaxation.
