Pose: Sukhasana
Start your new year with some meditation in sukhasana.
SUKHASANA (EASY POSE)
Sukhasana is a simple seated position, also known as easy pose. For some of us it may not be the most comfortable, but as we sit with it we can find our roots. We take this posture at the beginning of class, in the middle or at the end. It can bring us to a state of meditation as we bring and try to keep our awareness in the space. Whether we practice in a studio or at home, this pose is a great way to set your intention and calm the mind.
Key Cues
Feel the sits bones root into the ground
Lean into the front of the sit bones, this helps to activate your core in the pose
Lengthen the spine
Feel the shoulder blades draw down the back and slightly broaden the collarbone
Benefits
Strengthens the back
Stretches the ankles and knees
Modifications
Even though sukhasana is called “easy” pose, it’s not always easy. If you find it difficult to sit up straight, come to sit on a blanket or a block to help find the length in the spine. Pro tip: take the pose against the wall. Using a block, sit slightly away from the wall and place the block at the base of your shoulder blades. This is a great way to find the proper alignment and find relaxation in the pose, especially for long holds.
